Who taught me to knit socks with her fabulous tutorial here: Socks 101

This sock pattern of Ms. Royea’s helped me make my first pair of lovely wool socks. Pics as soon as I get my digi cam back.

It made a pair of lovely, warm wool socks – just as the weather around here got warmer.

There was a talented lady and her tom-boys granddaughters.

My grandmother crochets, knits (a little), sews and cooks a mean dinner. Out of 11 grandkids, 5 of us are female and had never shown even a bit of interest in learning her talents until fairly recently.

About two years ago, my ultra tom-boy cousin – whom we all call Twig because of her astonishing skinniness – settled down with an awesome job and an awesome dog (not to mention a pretty cool bf) and suddenly wanted to learn how to cook.

About two years ago , I – also a tom-boy and largely uninterested in “girly” things – had dinner with Grandma on night after which she began knitting another cousin a blanket. I watched her for a little while, paying attention as the pattern started to make sense and the colors fit together nicely.

I asked her to teach me.

She taught me to cast on, and to knit that night. Tragically, that’s pretty much all she knows about knitting (she’s far more interested in crochet).

Since then, I’ve searched the internet high and low for more info. I’ve bought a few books and magazines, I’ve petitioned other women at work who knit for help. But mostly I go it alone. I sit and I knit and reknit until I figure it out.

Trial and error, that’s my knitting.

So, don’t be too hard on me. I don’t hold the needles right, I don’t know squat about gauge and I can’t yet knit garments. But I’m learning. Anything you got, bring it on.
